Week 10 being the last Saturday in Autumn certainly didn’t show many signs that Winter is just around the corner. The warm afternoon and quite a thick smoke haze possibly did have an effect on all round performances.
Despite this the ‘hidden handicap’ did assist the few runners who managed to improve on their best time. Top of the list was Kirsten Pichler who reduced her previous time for the 3k by 25 seconds which was just enough to place her ahead of Hailey D’Ombrain and Jarrah Thomas, a speedy young lad having his first run with Victory after doing well at District schools carnival. Hailey and Jarrah were 2nd and 3rd. and fastest girl and boy.
Next on the improver list was 4k competitor Natasha Spicer whose improvement of 24 seconds just managed to keep her in front of Amelia Sim who also improved by 6 seconds. Not to be outdone by the longer distances, two improvements were noted in the 1k and 2k events. Young Cailin Burbage, who is turning five in June, finished just 2 seconds behind her sister in 5.56 to improve her 1k time by 18 seconds. Ayden Spicer clipped another 5 seconds from his 2k time and was also the fastest boy and is definitely getting closer to reducing his time to under 9 minutes.
Fastest girl in the 2k was visitor, Lucy Hoskins who managed to clock 8.54. Lucy was obviously training for the Regional school carnival in a couple of weeks. We certainly enjoy sharing the course with families who are able to bring their athletes for some additional training.
The Southern Anglican School Sport held their combined cross-country carnival on Tuesday 21st. Victory Runners were proud to have the Hill sisters, Evie & Tori representing the Nowra Anglican College. Evie won the 10yrs 2k and Tori was second in the 8/9yrs 2k both gaining selection to compete at the combined state independent school carnival at Eastern Creek. Well done girls. Evie also represented Victory as an individual competitor at the Athletics NSW Cross Country Relays held at Miranda Park on Saturday along with Rod and Jan Gibb who were assisting ANSW in an official capacity.
As Week 11 approaches and it is June 1st. a new Quote for the Month will be posted. As this month winds down I wish to take the opportunity to congratulate all who have competed during May for displaying victory in having done your best, which according to our quote by Bill Bowerman, when you have done your best, you are indeed a winner!
New families and individuals interested in running, jogging or walking in the various distances at Willandra please feel free to come and ‘have a go’.. …… All events start at 3pm.
