Quite a warm Autumn day was again experienced by runners and walkers for week nine. Before the official start our young runners who represented their school at the District Primary schools carnival on Friday received applause for the great all round effort they displayed in giving their best. Two of these were selected for the Regional Carnival at Willandra on the 7th. June. Congratulations to Alyssa Sim from Kangaroo Valley school who was second and Ayden Spicer from Illaroo Rd school who was fourth in their respective age categories.
Some good improvements were again noted this week. Starting with our 1k distance (using a sealed handicap for the placings) seven year old Amelia Hastedt improved her time by 52 seconds which earned her 1st place in the 1k.
In the 2k Bella Rose improved her time by 32 seconds and was also the fastest girl. The fastest boy was Joel Olbourne, a young lad from Tongarra (near Albion Park) who took the opportunity for some training on the course before he competes at the Regional Carnival.
Last weeks visitor in the 3k, Jai Carabine made the trip south again, and was a great training partner for Joel Harlor. Both the 11 year old boys battled it out all the way with only two seconds between them at the finish, each achieving a personal best time for the 3k. A great effort and exciting to witness. Thanks boys! Courtney Harrison headed these boys home for her second win in two weeks and managed to improve her time by 50 seconds.
The 4k distance was also responsible for the winners of Section 1 and 2 being credited with good improvements. 14 year old Reuben Pichler finished strongly to reduce his time by 43 seconds and Stewart Sim kept backmarker Cameron Harrison from catching him and improved by 27 seconds.
Despite only three competitors in the two lap distances, this event was still very interesting. Irwin Burbage and his brother Lloyd, who was visiting from Queensland took on the 8k and Kevyn Davis the 6k. Kevyn and Lloyd had a few position challenges but it was Irwin who was the victor finishing first in a good time of 35.17 for his first 8k run on the course.
As mentioned last week, Athletics NSW will be conducting the Waratah Series Challenge at Willandra on Saturday 22nd June. This event also incorporates the State Cross Country Championships for all ages, plus an all ages Fun Run. As this is held on our home ground we encourage all Victory members to participate. Please note the timetable of events as you may have to re-arrange your normal Saturday plans.
