As Week One of the Point Score competition for Victory Runners commenced on Saturday, many of the contestants were keen and excited to experience starting their event from a minus or plus handicap instead of the normal ‘go’ used for the 3 weeks of preliminary activity.
From the keen young 6 year old, Layla Burbage who was first to finish, completing the 1k in just a tick over 6 minutes to 70 year old Kevyn Davis who completed the 6k in 45 minutes, the 50 competitors in between are to be congratulated on their enthusiasm and performances.
Due to a wet track and very humid weather, fast times were not expected, however notable performances worth mentioning, starting with the 2k were Evie Hill 9:41 (fastest girl) and Ayden Spicer 9:54 (Fastest boy). Winner receiving the 10 points was young Cohen Matthews, Lexie Burinaga was second with 8 points and Eliz Onsel third receiving 6 points. All other finishes were rewarded with 5 points for a great effort and participation.
The 3k was a little depleted on numbers compared to the 2k, however was won by 12 year old Amelia Sim in her first run over this distance finished very strongly to earn the 10 points. 11 year old, Joel Harlor finished second for the 8 points in a good time for the conditions in 11:50. Third place and fastest girl was young Hailey D’Ombrain finishing in another good time of 12:36. Fastest male over the 3k starting on a handicap of 5:30 was Brooklyn Henry whose feet barely toughed the wet surface, finished in 10:06.
4k Course was very well contested with teenager Blake D’Omrain first, earning the 10 points and also the fastest male in an another excellent time considering the conditions of 16:25. Sister Maddison was second gaining 8 points and third place for 6 points was back marker on 5:30, Jai Holland looked very impressive in his first run over 4k.to finish in 17:10. Taking out the fastest female time was tri-athlete and first timer for Victory, Freya Robinson-Mills finishing in a time 19:09.
Also very impressive as a first timer over the 4k, Pam Mason who is well into the masters age category and very competitive, didn’t allow the hills of Willandra to daunt her. Well done Pam, very confident you will continue to achieve some great results.
Very light on in the 6k & 8k …. We will have to start advertising for some more runners interested in taking up the challenge for these two distances. Nevertheless, the two who completed the multiple laps for the 8k and 6k are to be congratulated as the weather was very draining. Well experienced and very competitive, always giving 100% Graeme Pepper managed the 8k in 42:30 while Kev. Davis, troubled by the heat made a sensible decision to cut back to the 6k.
A special request for all members to note in regards to starting time. In order to start the events at 3.:00pm for all ‘Go’ markers, it would be advisable to arrive at the venue around 2:30pm. This will allow time to check out your handicap time and a warm up session beforehand. More importantly, we will be able to start runners or walkers on minus handicaps prior to the official start time of 3:00pm. Ideally this will allow those in 6k & 8k to finish with the 4k runners.
